The windmill of Eerde is a living remembrance to the heavy fighting in Operation Market Garden during WWII, which was the base of the liberation of the south of our country. On 17 September 1944 the first paratroopers landed next to this windmill and Eerde became the first liberated village during this operation, although for a brief moment. Heavy fighting raged in our area and the windmill changed hands for at least six times en eventually was knocked out by artillery fire. The windmill was destroyed on 24th September 1944 during “The Battle of the Sanddunes”. In the windmill Sgt.Jacob H.Wingard,501pir from Pennsylvania was killed on September 18,1944.
